American musician and artist Kane Mayfield has dropped Ides of March – a series of 2,100 Bitcoin Ordinals looking to reshape music collection – on NFT marketplace Gamma.
Released on January 15, each digital collectible in the Ides of March series depicts a vinyl record that can be “flipped over” to reveal a hidden audio sample from a selection of underground rap icons. 20% of the Ordinals will be of the rare Dominus type, which will include some of “the earliest inscribed music”, accord to Mayfield.
Each Ordinal is priced at 0.0015 BTC – roughly $150 USD at the time of writing. No date has been announced for the end of the Ides of March minting phase, with almost 10% of the collection minted so far.
Who is Kane Mayfield?
Kane Mayfield is an American musician, rapper and artist, based in Flager Beach, Florida.
Beginning as a financial advisor before pursuing music full-time in the early 2010s, Mayfield’s debut album The Return of Rap showcased his ability to tackle complex themes with nuance and depth. His thoughtful insights, humour, and humble nature – alongside his willingness to buck mainstream trends – gave him a unique voice that thrilled casual listeners and critics alike.
Mayfield brought these same characteristics into his art. He has been active in the NFT industry since 2021, with initial works minted on Ethereum, and became an early pioneer of on-chain music. His innovations continued, with December 2023 album DUST incorporating actual Bitcoin transactions into its soundscape, bridging new horizons in music creation.
His work has been exhibited at the likes of NFT.NYC, Art Basel and Beeple‘s PepeFest 2024, and his digital collectibles can be found on platforms such as OpenSea, Rarible and Gamma.
What is Kane Mayfield’s Ides of March NFT collection?
Ides of March is a collection of 2,100 Bitcoin Ordinals, made available via the Gamma NFT marketplace starting January 15, 2025.
These 2,100 Ordinals come in two rarities; Imperium (common) and Dominus (rare). By “flipping over” an Ordinal, the holder can reveal an exclusive audio sample from an underground rap icon, including Ras Kass, @moneyb69, Mayfield himself, and many more.
Upon purchase, holders can connect their wallet to Inscribed Audio. This will present holders with a programmable music player for the Ordinal, a sampler, and an “ancient Roman bitmap with unlockable treasure”.
Additional rewards are on offer for top collectors. The top 100 collectors will receive and airdrop of limited Bitmap wearables, the top 21 collectors will receive an airdrop of “Bitcoin-infused” album DUST, and the top 3 collectors will receive a physical vinyl of both Ides of March and DUST, shipped for free.
