Mattel has announced it will stop releasing new Hot Wheels NFTs after 2025, pausing further development of one of its most prominent digital collectibles projects.
The Hot Wheels Virtual Garage, which launched in late 2021, will no longer offer new “Series” or feature drops “for the foreseeable future,” according to a notice posted on Mattel’s website.
Despite the halt in new content, the company will maintain the existing infrastructure supporting NFT holders. Marketplace trading, account access, redemptions, and community channels will remain available through at least the end of 2025.

Why is Mattel suspending Hot Wheels NFTs?
Mattel stated the decision was made as part of an internal evaluation of the “changing world of virtual collectibles.” The company did not cite specific reasons such as declining demand or financial performance, but the broader NFT market has seen a sharp drop in activity and revenue since its peak in 2021–2022.
This change also follows similar moves by other consumer brands. Nike, for instance, recently faced a lawsuit after reducing support for its NFT venture RTFKT. The case has raised concerns about how NFT projects are handled post-launch, especially in terms of consumer expectations and legal responsibilities.
Mattel has not said whether the decision was influenced by such developments, but its announcement suggests a cautious approach to future digital projects.
What happens to the existing NFTs?
Whilst new NFTs will no longer be released, existing Hot Wheels NFTs will remain accessible and tradable on Mattel’s proprietary digital marketplace. Users will still be able to view their collections and conduct peer-to-peer transactions on the platform.
Physical redemptions linked to NFT ownership—such as collectible die-cast models of the Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 and the 1960s Batmobile—will still be honoured. Mattel confirmed that all pending and outstanding redemptions will be fulfilled as previously promised.
However, current NFTs cannot be transferred to external wallets or used on third-party marketplaces. The company said it is “exploring future options” for such functionality but has not committed to a timeline or specific changes.
What’s next for Hot Wheels?
Mattel has not provided details about any successor or replacement for the Virtual Garage project. It also did not confirm whether it will launch future NFT-based initiatives for other brands in its portfolio.
Other digital ventures by the company—including NFT releases tied to the Barbie franchise and previous collaborations with external partners—have not been publicly updated in light of this announcement.
Mattel said it is working on a broader long-term strategy for digital assets, but no further specifics were provided. For now, support services, marketplace access, and community tools for Hot Wheels NFT holders will remain available until at least the end of 2025.
