Collectibles platform Courtyard has announced a partnership with Ethereum Layer-2 network Polygon to auction a 10-graded, first-edition 1999 shadowless holographic Charizard Pokémon NFT Card.
The card, worth an estimated $250,000 USD, is currently stored in a Brink’s vault, and has been tokenized ahead of the 30-day auction that began on December 6.
Whomever wins the auction will have the option to continue to have the card physically shipped to them, should they wish.
When will the Holographic Charizard Pokémon NFT auction take place?
The auction is began on Friday, December 6, with a 30-day duration – and is part of a wider auction of rare Pokémon cards on Courtyard.
“This auction isn’t just about a Charizard card; it’s about showing how blockchain can revolutionize the collectibles world,” said Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron. “From traditional collectors to DeFi enthusiasts, we’re inviting everyone to experience the benefits of on-chain ownership.”
According to a representative from Polygon Labs – the team behind the Polygon network – the company “purchased the card directly from a reputable seller in the trading card space.”
What could the Charizard Pokémon card fetch at auction?
According to pricecharting.com, two of these cards have been auctioned via eBay this year, fetching $194,650 USD and $347,328 USD respectively. The auction is estimated to rake in $250,000 USD.
This isn’t the first time that Courtyard have sold NFTs relating to Pokémon cards. Back in September 2023, the platform sold a host of $5 USD NFT packs, each containing a Pokémon card owned by Courtyard that was vaulted with Brink’s.
“Tokenization is changing the game for collectibles,” said Courtyard CEO Nicolas le Jeune. “With this auction, we’re not just spotlighting an iconic card; we’re demonstrating how Courtyard’s platform is transforming how people collect and trade.”
The Pokémon Company International, the official company behind the Pokémon brand, has not developed or approved any Pokémon-related NFTs – although Courtyard are using NFTs as a medium of exchange and proof of ownership of the card, rather than an official Pokémon product in its own right.
