Multimedia artist and musician Yoshi Sodeoka is auctioning ‘Serene Abyss‘, a 1-of-1 video NFT from his series The Swarm: 1.618, via NFT artworks platform Verse.
Serene Abyss is the latest in a series of 18 uniquely-crafted video NFT collectibles by Sodeoka that explore the behaviour and movement of flighted animals, such as birds, bats and butterflies.
Bidding began at 18 UTC on January 15, and is set to close at 18 UTC on January 17. As of writing, the piece currently sits at its starting bid of $1,000 USD.
Who is Yoshi Sodeoka?
Yoshi Sodeoka is a Japanese-born multimedia artist and musician, based in New York.
Sodeoka’s career in the arts spans three decades, and he has achieved particular notoriety for his exploration of video, prints and fine art NFTs. His style is based in neo-psychedalia, with reflections of his passions for music – in particular genres such as noise, punk, and metal – and often integrate video feedback, sampling, online imagery and experimental audio.
The acclaim of Sodeoka’s work has been profound, with exhibitions at the likes of the Centre Pompidou and the Cleveland Museum of Art, and pieces in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of the Moving Image, and San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art.
His client list is extensive, ranging from musical artists such as Metallica, Tame Impala and Beck, publications such as The New York Times, Wired and The Atlantic, and brands such as Adidas, Nike, Apple and Samsung.
Sodeoka has been active in the NFT industry since 2021, with most of his works minted on Ethereum. His NFTs can be found on platforms such as Foundation, Nifty Gateway, Verse and OpenSea.
What is Yoshi Sodeoka’s The Swarm NFT collection?
The Swarm is a collection of 34 unique 1-of-1 NFTs that first debuted in-part in August 2024, made available on Verse, and minted on Ethereum.
Following 2023’s The Flood, The Swarm marks Sodeoka’s second exhibition on Verse. It comes in two parts; The Swarm: r = 0, which features 16 generative video NFTs, and The Swarm: 1.618, which features 18 originally-crafted video pieces.
“The Swarm offers a look into the intricate movements of simulated birds, merging experimental art with emotional depth and abstract visuals with mathematical clarity” stated Sodeoka.
As a whole, The Swam builds on Sodeoka’s exploration of natural systems, using particle systems, vector graphics and AI image generation together with video production processes to portray the clash between synthetic realities and natural phenomena. The collection challenges us to look at the boundaries between fantasy and reality, and to take a deeper look at the relationship between natural and digital environments.
