D20 Labs, the independent Web3 game studio formed amidst Zynga‘s recent departure from the industry, has announced a brand-new blockchain-based poker game will be arriving on Base.
Available on PC and mobile, Royal Nutz Poker Club is a self-styled “social casino poker game”. Instead of wagering fiat currency, D20 Labs claims that players will be engaging with a rewards system that brings in a number of its partners, including ApeChain – a product of the ApeCoin DAO.
Alongside this new title, D20 Labs has taken over the management and continued development of Sugartown, Zynga’s flagship Web3 game.
What is D20 Labs?
D20 Labs is an independent Web3 game studio formed by the team behind Zynga’s Sugartown blockchain game.
By breaking away from Zynga, D20 Labs believes they are “uniquely qualified” to innovate in the blockchain gaming industry, including in the continued development of Sugartown – which they now fully own – and in their newly-announced Royal Nutz Poker Club title.
According to @camolNFT, Marketing Lead at D20 Labs, the company has “very healthy funding + runways”, and is actively developing “multiple other titles”.
Zynga have yet to comment on what this means for their future in Web3 gaming. Zynga was purchased by Take-Two – owners of Rockstar Games and 2K Sports – in 2022, with open plans to develop blockchain-based games. It is unclear whether Zynga – or Take-Two – plans to engage with blockchain gaming in future.

Connected to Sugartown’s IP and lore, though considered an independent title, the game sees players take part in poker tournaments to climb leaderboards and earn prizes.
Access is currently limited to owners of Sugartown’s Oras NFTs, as well as holders of APE tokens on ApeChain. More communities are due to be granted access soon.
